Samsung Galaxy Mega Series Launched in India

Just a month and half after announcing the Galaxy Mega series and launching them world-wide, Samsung launched their Galaxy Mega series phones, the Samsung galaxy mega 5.8 and Samsung galaxy mega 6.3  in India today. The phones, a cheaper, bigger version of the Samsung Galaxy Note II come with amazing features and interesting specifications.
Samsung galaxy mega series effectively eliminated the line between tablets, phablets and phones. The bigger phabet at 6.3 inches is merely .7 inches shorter than the 7-inch tabs dominating the market. The phones though huge come with a decent price-tag, making them interesting buys. Also, the Samsung Galaxy Mega series phones could be a good buy for users looking for portable and compact tablets as they eliminate the need to carry two devices: a tablet and a phone at the same time.
The larger of two, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, as the name suggests comes with a gigantic 6.3-inch display with 720 pixel resolution. Samsung has ditched the AMOLED and Super AMOLED screens and instead the device comes with a standard TFT LCD screen. This might be to keep the price of the phablet low but with a price tag of over Rs 30,000 we’re not impressed.

Samsung has ditched the AMOLED and Super AMOLED screens and instead the device comes with a standard TFT LCD screen. The Samsung galaxy mega 6.3 comes with a 1.7 GHz dual core Exynos processor. The phablet runs on the latest version of Google’s operating software – Android Jelly Bean. The phone also has a rather generous RAM of 1.5 GB. While Samsung has ensured that the RAM is not the same as its high end, premium phones, by providing a 1.5 GB RAM, Samsung automatically put the phone above the 1 GB variants.  The phone comes with two variants for the internal memory: 8 GB and 16 GB. Additionally, there is also an expandable MicroSD card slot with a capacity to expand up to 64 GB. Once again while the features are satisfactory and we don;t see much to complain about, a quad-core processor might have been good considering the phablet is in the premium segment mark.

The phone comes with an 8 MP rear end snapper with LED flash. The front camera is a 1.9 MP camera for video-calling. Samsung galaxy mega 6.3 which boasts of 3200 mAh of battery power!

The younger sibling, Samsung galaxy mega 5.8 comes with a 5.8-inch touch screen. Just like the elder sibling, the galaxy mega 5.8 display is also a TFT screen. The phone runs on the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean ver. 4.2.2. Samsung galaxy mega 5.8 comes with 1.4 GHz, dual core Exynos processor. Apart from the processor which has been further downsized in the smaller variant, the phone also lacks high speed connectivity options like NFC, IR emitter and LTE. All other features are pretty much the same as the Samsung galaxy mega 6.3.

Samsung galaxy mega 5.8 comes with an internal memory of 8 GB which is expandable up to 64 GB via MicroSD card slot (there is no 16 GB variant). The RAM is once again clocked at 1.5 GB. SAmsung galaxy mega 5.8 comes with an 8 MP rear end camera with LED flash and a 1.9 MP front camera for video-calling. The phablet comes with 2600 mAh powered battery.

Though the features are decent, the phablets offer nothing more than a bigger screen. Samsung galaxy mega 5.8 and Samsung galaxy mega 6.3 priced at Rs 25,100 and Rs 31,490 respectively might not enamour Indian buyers. Back home, there are phone makers like Karbonn, Micromax and Lava which offer phones with better specifications at a cheaper price.
